How I learned to build websites

Jan 30, 2017 | Uncategorized

Now that I am beginning to teach others how to build WordPress websites, I thought it would be helpful to share my story and how I learned to build websites.

The first website I ever built was in 2011 when I lived on a beach in Mexico. I am very type-A and as beautiful as my environment was, I got bored and wanted to do something fulfilling. So, I decided to learn to be an affiliate marketer so I could earn money from anywhere. Sounded like a really great idea, and I dove in with a $300 investment for an affiliate marketing course.

One of the first things this course recommended after picking a niche was to build a website, because that’s where your affiliate links live so people can buy your advertised products and then you get paid. I took this step a bit too seriously, and got so caught up in building the site that it became my 9-5 ‘job.’ I worked late, and early, and instead of being out on the beach I was inside our awesome little cement box apartment working on my computer to make this affiliate site really something special.

It took me a solid month to build my first website. I learned everything myself through trial and error, lots of Googling, and by taking advice from 100 different places and piecing it together for what worked for me.

But I got through it! And once I had a website I stopped taking that course. I realized I already had a business – the one I just created in the form of this website – one that was living, breathing, and real. One that deserved my attention, one that made me happy and brought me fulfillment. The website was a health and fitness focused blog called Primal Healthy Fit (it still exists if you’re curious).

About 3 months after I launched my first website, my now-husband and I read an article about underground dinners happening in Dallas, and he wanted to do something similar when we moved back ourselves in a few months. I stayed up that night building his website, and making his business idea real. ONE NIGHT. It wasn’t the most incredible website to ever be built, BUT IT TOOK AN IDEA FROM INCEPTION TO REALITY IN ONE FREAKIN NIGHT!

My husband woke up the next day and had a website he could send people and start getting the word out. It was seriously incredible, and it brought so much excitement to the idea I think it’s a huge factor in making the dinners a success.

I learned how to build websites myself, which was fun but honestly, I’m not sure doing something the hard, slow was is impressive. If I had been able to take a course on how to do exactly what I wanted to do, I had plenty of time to do so and it would have made things so much easier… not to mention the website itself would probably have turned out better.

That’s why I’ve started teaching how to build WordPress websites. Our Build Your Own WordPress Website course is open for enrollment. If you need a website, or will need one, check it out – it might be the perfect fit for you. It is my sincere hope that it helps you take an idea or dream and make it a reality.
